You know it is hot and dry in West Texas.....

We had such a wonderful spring....we were above our annual rainfall by 6 inches at the end of June.  And then the rain stopped, the heat rose to 100+ and has continued on into August.  We have had about 20 or more days of 100+.  Meanwhile all the plants that put on new growth are suffering.  My  Flame Acanthas look bad.  This morning while I was cutting back the dead blooms on almost all the blooming plants, I noticed that even the tea weed (milk weed?) was dying.  Even the mint that I have tried to at least control has died.  The garden has called it quits except for the okra and it is complaining.

The birds take showers in the sprinklers on the day we can water....and the rest of the time they hover around the bird baths.  I hope the critters around here find enough water and shade.  The snakes seem to think our house is the perfect place.  I was walking past the entrance to the downstairs office and saw something on the rug.  When I stepped back for a better view I realized it was a young Coachwhip snake.   So with the aid of a yard stick and some noise, Tom and I managed to usher it outside without, I hope, traumatizing it too much.  My California daughter-in-law who was here for a visit was very surprised and not too happy about the new guest.  It didn't help when another Coachwhip (smaller though) turned up on the back patio the next morning....

The raccoons have discovered that I keep some rain water on the patio for watering the plants that are out there and they have decided that is is a great place to wash up....and make noise at night, and get their dirty little paw prints on both sliding glass doors that open up to the patio.  I have learned to put pot shards over every available digging spot in pot plants to almost keep them from digging.

Life might not be too exciting this time of the year....but it is interesting.
